Rain Compositing Study
This project explores how rain can be used to express emotion through compositing. I experimented with layering, color grading, and lighting to create different moods ranging from melancholy and isolation to warmth and nostalgia. By adjusting rain density, texture, and motion blur, I aimed to capture the subtle balance between sadness and serenity. The work focuses on how atmosphere and visual rhythm can evoke emotional storytelling through simple visual elements.

Concept and Research Approach
This project began with a simple question: Does rain in animation always signify sadness? I aimed to explore rain as a constructed emotional symbol rather than a natural truth. Using theories from Barthes and Bachelard, I approached rain as a cultural and reflective space shaped by human perception. Through experimental compositing, I tested how variations in rain intensity, color palette, and sound design influence the viewer’s emotional response. Drawing on McLuhan’s idea that “the medium is the message,” I examined how form and rhythm in media generate emotion beyond narrative content. The results suggest that emotions in animation are not fixed but actively constructed through audiovisual experience.
